Discover Restoran Chuen How

If you’re exploring local food spots around 347, Jalan Merak, Taman Melaka Baru, 75350 Melaka, Malaysia, Restoran Chuen How is one of those places that quietly wins you over. I first dropped by on a humid weekday evening after hearing several glowing reviews from residents in Taman Melaka Baru. From the outside, it looks like a simple neighborhood coffee shop, but once you step in, the aroma of wok-fried garlic and simmering broth tells you you’re in for something special.

The menu leans heavily toward classic Malaysian Chinese dishes, with a strong focus on zi char-style cooking. Think fried rice, sweet and sour pork, ginger and scallion fish, claypot tofu, and hearty noodle dishes. What stood out during my visit was the wok hei-the smoky breath of the wok that food experts often say separates average stir-fry from excellent stir-fry. According to culinary research often cited by professional chefs, extremely high heat and rapid tossing create complex Maillard reactions, which enhance flavor depth. You can actually taste that technique here, especially in their fried kuey teow and sambal kangkung.

I ordered their signature butter chicken, a plate of salted egg squid, and a simple egg fried rice to share. The butter chicken arrived coated in a rich, slightly sweet sauce with crispy curry leaves on top. It wasn’t greasy, which is impressive because deep-fried dishes can easily become heavy. The salted egg squid had that creamy, grainy texture that fans of salted egg yolk dishes look for. It reminded me of similar versions I’ve tried in Kuala Lumpur, yet this one felt fresher and more balanced. The rice, though simple, was fluffy and fragrant-something that seems basic but often goes wrong in many diners.

Cleanliness and food safety are things I always pay attention to. The Ministry of Health Malaysia regularly emphasizes hygiene standards in food premises, and while I don’t have access to this restaurant’s official inspection records, the open kitchen concept and visible food handling practices were reassuring. Staff wore gloves when necessary, tables were wiped promptly, and turnover was efficient without feeling rushed. These small operational details build trust.

Another reason this restaurant draws a steady crowd is its pricing. In a time when dining costs are rising across Malaysia, it’s refreshing to find a place where a family of four can eat comfortably without overspending. During my visit, the total bill for three generous dishes and drinks came in at a range comparable to other neighborhood kopitiam-style eateries in Melaka. That affordability, paired with portion size, explains why locals keep coming back.

Location also plays a big role. Being situated in Taman Melaka Baru makes it accessible for residents and convenient for visitors staying nearby. Parking along Jalan Merak can get a bit tight during peak dinner hours, especially on weekends. However, arriving slightly earlier-around 6 pm-helps avoid the rush. Based on conversations with regular customers, weekend dinners tend to be the busiest, while weekday lunches are more relaxed.

Service here feels genuine rather than scripted. The staff are quick to recommend dishes if you’re unsure what to order. When I asked about the best-selling items, they confidently suggested the steamed fish and their house-special curry. That kind of straightforward, practical recommendation reflects experience rather than upselling. In the food industry, hospitality researchers often highlight that authenticity in service significantly impacts repeat visits, and you can see that principle at work here.

One limitation worth noting is that the menu may not cater extensively to strict vegetarians or those with very specific dietary restrictions. While there are vegetable dishes available, cross-contamination in busy kitchens is always possible. If you have allergies or strict requirements, it’s best to inform the staff clearly before ordering.

Overall, this spot fits comfortably into Melaka’s diverse dining landscape. It’s not a fine-dining establishment, nor does it try to be trendy. Instead, it focuses on consistency, flavor, and value. Whether you’re a local looking for a dependable dinner spot or a visitor wanting to experience everyday Malaysian Chinese cuisine, this restaurant delivers a satisfying, down-to-earth meal that feels both familiar and memorable.

  • I am looking for a mouth watering roasted and char siu pork belly shop at Malacca. Friends introduced this local restaurant with char siu, roasted pork and we heading to it for lunch. Parking could be a challenge because there are many shop lots and restaurants along the streets. Well everyone will have to queue and choose respective dishes before pay and be seated. I was really impressed with variety of dishes such as veggie, curry chicken, fried chicken, fishes, fried eggs, braised pork and so so many other dishes. Char siu is sweet and with savoury flavours, in contrast roasted pork belly offerings crispy crunchy skin and juicy meat. Satisfying crunch and sweetness in every bite, it makes us drool with anticipation. I simply enjoyed this dining experience, is indeed recommended.

  • This shop gives a Nostalgic Coffee shop vibe, the signature dish is actually a mixed rice with roast pork. The Char Siew tasted sweet, charred smokey chopped in smaller size for crunchiness, the siew yoke tasted crunchy crispy and also burnt, it is still crispy though they looked like it was burnt. I will not use fine dining ruler to judge this shop, the roast pork, the 斋鹅 tasted good, when mixed with the dark sauce it combines the old school feel of when you’re still schooling, and your dad bought you a very nice plate of roast pork rice, this is it. The happiness flows through your mouth when you give a bite. Superb. Order some classic coffee ice or bali drink to relive the moment. Queue is rather acceptable for good food, is it worth a detour? I would detour to come here for the food. Price ranges from RM8 - RM13 for two mixed pork with vege. (Pork is more expensive now and the ringgit is devalued) its not cheap but I would come.

  • Main offering here are tasty charred pork in different varieties, what I liked most was the charsiew strip, full of sweet and smokey flavour and tasted fresh. Apart from that you can also top up with the classic fried egg and other side dishes. I find the braised tofu and egg good, and also liked the moey choy and stir fried cabbage. After choosing your meat and vege on plate, your plate will send to next station for the gravy, usually I prefer the soy and curry gravy mixed, superb mash up of tastes.

  • Food is nice, i tried their salted egg pork rice, overall okay. It's a chicken rice shop actually but they sell many variety of food like cheese chicken/pork chop rice, salted egg sotong and more which is nice. Cleanliness not bad, service is acceptable. The shop regularly has many customers but it wont be too crowded, the food will however be ready within 15 minutes wait. Price is acceptable too, like for my salted egg pork chop rice with egg the price is Rm8.50, fair for the quantity.
